Have a think or discuss with a grown u the concept of precepts and check out the full list of Mr Browne’s precepts in the appendix at the back of the novel.
What do you think about Mr Browne’s precept? ‘When given the choice between right and being kind, choose kind.’
Your activity is to have a go at choosing/ writing your own precept. Make it your personal motto: it can be a song lyric, quotation from a novel, a famous saying or something personal between your friends and family. Make a note of what your precept means to you and the situations in which it might be useful.
Now read from the chapter ‘Lunch’ to ‘Apples’ (pages 49-66).
